Here's the simple version: diethylpropion is itself a stimulant, similar in spirit to caffeine. Yerba mate is loaded with caffeine too. When you stack one stimulant on top of another, the effects can add up. So this isn't really about your liver breaking the drug down faster or slower. It's more like pressing the gas pedal twice at once.

What that could feel like: a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a bump in blood pressure. This is mostly expert opinion rather than hard proof, so it's a sensible caution, not a reason to panic. An occasional cup is different from drinking strong mate all day. Before pairing them regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Diethylpropion Used For?

Brand names: Radtue, Tenuate, Durad, Tenuate Dosepan

Diethylpropion is used to help manage exogenous obesity (excess body weight from outside factors like diet) in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher who haven't lost enough weight through diet and exercise alone. It is meant to be used for only a few weeks as part of a calorie-restricted diet plan.

All available tablet products — both the immediate-release tablets and the extended-release tablets — are approved for this purpose. Each is approved for use as a single medication only; combining diethylpropion with any other weight-loss drug is not allowed.
