Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: it's really about the caffeine in the mate, not the omeprazole itself. Your body clears caffeine using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and omeprazole can mildly slow that enzyme down. The theory is that caffeine might hang around a bit longer, so you could feel more of its effects, things like jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach.

Honestly, this one is rated minor and is only theoretical, based on how the drugs work rather than real-world reports. For most people, a cup or two of mate alongside omeprazole won't cause trouble. If you notice you feel extra wired, just ease up on the mate and check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: lab studies suggest yerba mate can mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear omeprazole. In theory, that could let a bit more omeprazole hang around, which might slightly bump up its effects or side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or stomach upset. Omeprazole is the active drug itself (not a prodrug), so more of it generally means a touch more of its acid-lowering action.

That said, this is very thin evidence, only seen in test tubes, not in real people, and it's rated minor. For most folks drinking mate in normal amounts, this isn't something to lose sleep over. If you take omeprazole daily and drink a lot of mate, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
