Clindamycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down clindamycin. In lab studies (not in people), yerba mate appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in your body, clindamycin could clear a little more slowly and build up slightly, which in theory might nudge up the usual side effects like nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This comes from test-tube research only, and it's rated a minor interaction. For most folks, a few cups of mate alongside a short antibiotic course is unlikely to cause real trouble. Still, if you drink mate heavily or use concentrated extracts, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Clindamycin is prescribed for serious infections caused by certain bacteria — including anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive without oxygen), streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci. It's often chosen when penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used, such as in people with a penicillin allergy.

It can treat infections of the lungs, skin and soft tissue, bloodstream, abdomen, and female reproductive organs. Because it carries real risks, doctors reserve it for infections where safer antibiotics aren't appropriate.
