Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the short version on pairing yerba mate with rifampin. Lab studies (in a test tube, not in people) suggest yerba mate may gently slow the CYP3A4 enzyme that helps clear many medications. In theory, that could let a CYP3A4 drug build up a little, which might mean stronger effects or more side effects.

For rifampin specifically, I wouldn't lose sleep over this. Rifampin isn't really cleared by CYP3A4 in a meaningful way (in fact, rifampin is famous for speeding up that enzyme and lowering levels of other drugs). So this particular interaction is very theoretical and likely minor here. The bigger picture is staying consistent with your TB treatment. If you enjoy mate, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can confirm it fits your plan.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
