Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
Nephrotoxic Drugs
Why this applies to Rifampin
Rifampin falls under Nephrotoxic Drugs — the group Asarabacca interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern when asarabacca meets rifampin. This isn't about how either one is broken down. Instead, it's about your kidneys handling stress from two directions at once. Rifampin can occasionally be hard on the kidneys (and the liver), and asarabacca is frequently contaminated with aristolochic acid, a compound the FDA flags as a serious kidney toxin. Stacked together, the worry is additive harm to your kidney function.
This is rated a major interaction, though the evidence is on the weaker side and it doesn't happen to everyone. Honestly, my bigger message is that asarabacca itself isn't something I'd recommend at all. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before pairing anything new with rifampin.

About Asarabacca
What is Asarabacca?
- Sinus and nasal congestion
- Coughs and bronchial complaints
- Inducing sweating
- Inducing vomiting (emetic)
- Digestive upset
Asarabacca is a European woodland plant traditionally used to clear the nose, cause sweating, or trigger vomiting, but it is rarely used today. It belongs to a plant family that often contains aristolochic acid, a substance the FDA considers unsafe because it can cause serious kidney damage and cancer, so we do not recommend using it.
About Rifampin
What Is Rifampin Used For?
Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor
Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.
It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.
Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.
