Theoretically, concomitant use of riluzole and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of both riluzole and the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine and riluzole are both metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2), and concomitant use might reduce the metabolism of one or both agents.

Here's the gist for your ALS medicine. Both riluzole and the caffeine in yerba mate are cleared by the same liver pathway, an enzyme called CYP1A2. When two things lean on the same exit door, they can slow each other down. So drinking yerba mate could let a bit more riluzole linger in your system, and at the same time the caffeine may hang around longer too.

In real life that might mean more of riluzole's usual side effects (nausea, dizziness, tiredness, or stomach upset) along with a jittery, wired, hard-to-sleep feeling from the caffeine. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not strong human studies, so an occasional cup likely isn't a crisis. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before making mate a daily habit.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
