Here's the simple version: triazolam (Halcion) is a sleeping pill that works by calming brain activity so you can drift off. Yerba mate, on the other hand, is loaded with caffeine, which does the opposite by revving your nervous system up. So putting a stimulant on top of a sleep aid is a bit like pressing the gas and the brake at the same time. The caffeine could partly cancel out the drowsy, sleep-promoting effect you're counting on from triazolam.

Keep in mind this concern is theoretical, based on how these two work rather than firm studies. Still, it makes sense to avoid yerba mate (and other caffeine) in the evening near your bedtime dose. If your sleep isn't improving, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for Halcion (triazolam): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out. Lab studies hint that yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, more triazolam could linger in your system, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like next-morning grogginess, heavy drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. The concern comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so it's labeled minor and theoretical. A casual cup of mate is unlikely to be a big deal, but since triazolam is already a strong sleep medicine, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

What Is Triazolam Used For?

Brand names: Halcion, Triazo, Apo-Triazo, Gen-Triazolam, Mylan-Triazolam, Novo-Triolam, Nu-Triazo

Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
