Here's the simple version: yerba mate is basically a caffeine drink, and modafinil is already a wake-up medication. Stacking a stimulant on top of a stimulant can add up. The concern isn't that mate changes how your body breaks modafinil down, it's that the two have similar revved-up effects that can pile on.

So when you combine them, you may notice more of modafinil's typical side effects, things like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, anxiety, headache, or trouble settling down to sleep at night. This is mostly expert opinion rather than hard proof, and a single cup now and then is unlikely to be a big deal. Still, if you drink mate regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Modafinil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with mate and modafinil. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear modafinil from your body. Lab (test-tube) studies suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, if it does, modafinil could hang around longer and feel a little stronger, meaning you might notice more of its usual effects like jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, headache, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab work, not real people, and it's rated as minor. On top of that, mate itself has caffeine, which can stack on top of modafinil's stimulating effects. If you drink mate regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
