Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

This combo product (think Midol or Pamprin) pairs acetaminophen for pain with pyrilamine, an antihistamine, and pamabrom, which is a mild caffeine-related diuretic that helps with bloating. Here's the connection: yerba mate also contains caffeine, and pamabrom is itself a gentle water pill. Stacking caffeine on top of a diuretic could, in theory, nudge your potassium a little lower than either would alone.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how these ingredients work, not something well documented in real people. A few cups of mate alongside an occasional dose is unlikely to cause trouble. But if you're drinking a lot of mate, or you feel muscle cramps, weakness, or a racing heartbeat, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the thing about products like Midol Max or Pamprin: they combine acetaminophen (a pain reliever), pamabrom (a mild diuretic with a touch of caffeine), and pyrilamine (an antihistamine). The caffeine piece is what matters here. Yerba mate also brings its own caffeine to the party, so stacking the two can pile on more stimulant effects than you intended.

What might you feel? Jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, an upset stomach, or feeling wired and anxious. This is more of a theory-based caution (expert opinion, not hard studies), and a single cup with an occasional dose probably isn't a big deal. Still, if you drink mate regularly, mention it to your pharmacist so you can keep your total caffeine reasonable.
