Yerba Mate + Acetazolamide
Acetazolamide brand names: Diamox, Ak-Zol.
Yerba Mate has a moderate interaction with Acetazolamide. Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.

DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Acetazolamide
Acetazolamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with mate and acetazolamide (Diamox). This medicine is a diuretic, and one of its known effects is to nudge your potassium levels down. Yerba mate brings caffeine to the table, and in larger amounts caffeine can also push potassium a little lower. So the worry is that the two together might add up and leave your potassium too low.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on how each one works rather than solid studies. A few cups of mate likely won't tip the scales. But heavy intake could matter, and low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you drink mate regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your potassium.

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
About Acetazolamide
What Is Acetazolamide Used For?
Brand names: Diamox, Ak-Zol
Acetazolamide is used as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment. Across products, it is used for glaucoma, which is high pressure inside the eye.
Some products have more uses. Acetazolamide tablets and Acetazolamide injection are also used for swelling (edema) from congestive heart failure, drug-induced edema, and certain epilepsies (petit mal and unlocalized seizures). Acute mountain sickness prevention is listed for the tablets, the extended-release capsules, and one of the injection labels, but not every injection product.
