Trichlormethiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the simple version. Trichlormethiazide is a thiazide-type water pill, and one thing it tends to do on its own is lower your potassium level. The caffeine in yerba mate can nudge potassium a little lower too. So in theory, sipping a lot of mate while taking this diuretic could add up and push your potassium down further than the medication alone would.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven to cause problems for most people. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. An occasional cup is unlikely to matter, but heavy daily mate is worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, who may simply keep an eye on your potassium.
