Yerba Mate + Clonazepam
Clonazepam brand names: Klonopin, Rivotril, Ceberclon.
Clonazepam falls into 2 drug categories that Yerba Mate can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might reduce the efficacy of benzodiazepines.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Clonazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
BENZODIAZEPINES
1 of 2Why this applies to Clonazepam
Clonazepam falls under BENZODIAZEPINES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine can antagonize the anxiolytic effects of benzodiazepines.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here is the simple version: clonazepam (Klonopin) is a calming medicine that quiets overactive nerve signals, which is how it eases panic and helps control seizures. Yerba mate, on the other hand, is a stimulant because of its caffeine. So the two work in opposite directions. The caffeine in mate may push against the calming effect of your clonazepam, meaning you could feel a bit more jittery, anxious, or wide awake than you would otherwise.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves, not a dangerous, hard-proven interaction. An occasional cup likely won't undo your medicine, but large or daily amounts might blunt the relief you're looking for. If you notice that, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Clonazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear clonazepam. In lab dish studies, yerba mate has shown it can slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, clonazepam could hang around a little longer than usual, which in theory might nudge up its calming effects, things like extra drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, and it's rated a minor interaction. For most people enjoying mate in normal amounts, it's unlikely to cause a noticeable problem. If you drink a lot of it or feel unusually sleepy, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clonazepam page
“Clonazepam (Klonopin) slows brain activity to control seizures and panic, and most of what interacts with it pushes in one of two directions: deepening that sedation or changing how much drug is in your blood. This is a list to approach carefully.”

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
About Clonazepam
What Is Clonazepam Used For?
Brand names: Klonopin, Rivotril, Ceberclon
Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.
It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.

Clonazepam Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Clonazepam as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Yerba Mate — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
