Tramadol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist of it: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down tramadol. In lab dish studies, yerba mate seems to slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in real life, tramadol could clear out of you a bit more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or constipation.

That said, I don't want to scare you. This is rated a minor interaction, and the evidence comes only from test-tube work, not people. A casual cup of mate is unlikely to cause trouble. If you drink it heavily or use concentrated mate supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.
