Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the gist: hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide and others) is a water pill that can already lower your potassium as your body flushes out extra salt and fluid. Yerba mate contains caffeine, and in larger amounts caffeine may nudge potassium a little lower too. Put them together and, in theory, your potassium could dip more than it would with the pill alone.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly based on how these things work on paper, not strong studies in people, so try not to panic. A cup or two of mate is unlikely to be a big deal. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, so if you drink a lot of mate or take potassium-related medicines, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
