Yerba Mate and Temazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Temazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

BENZODIAZEPINES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Temazepam

Temazepam falls under BENZODIAZEPINES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might reduce the efficacy of benzodiazepines.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine can antagonize the anxiolytic effects of benzodiazepines.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: temazepam (Restoril) is a sleep aid that calms the brain, while yerba mate contains caffeine, a stimulant that does the opposite. Temazepam isn't a prodrug, so this isn't really about how your body breaks it down. It's more of a tug-of-war on how you feel. The caffeine in mate can work against temazepam's calming, sleep-promoting effect, which could make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves, not strong proof from studies. Common sense helps here: a stimulating drink near bedtime can undercut any sleep medicine. If you enjoy mate, having it earlier in the day is the easy fix. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Temazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with temazepam (Restoril) and yerba mate. Lab studies suggest the antioxidants in yerba mate can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In theory, if that enzyme clears temazepam more slowly, a little more of the drug could linger in your system, which might leave you feeling extra drowsy, groggy, or unsteady the next morning.

The good news is that I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence so far is only from test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated as a minor interaction. On top of that, temazepam is mostly processed by a different pathway, so 3A4 isn't its main route. Still, since yerba mate's caffeine can also work against a sleep aid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temazepam page

“Alcohol is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking temazepam (Restoril), a benzodiazepine sleep medicine. Beer and wine both carry major ratings because they layer their own sedation on top of a drug that already depresses the nervous system, and that additive drowsiness runs through 78 of the 197 supplements on file.”

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
