Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Nitrazepam is a benzodiazepine used mainly as a sleeping pill, so it works by calming and slowing down your nervous system. Yerba mate does the opposite. Its caffeine is a stimulant that wakes you up and revs your brain back up. So the worry here isn't that the drug builds up to dangerous levels, it's a simple tug-of-war: the caffeine may push against the very drowsiness and calm you're taking nitrazepam to get.

In real life that could mean you don't fall asleep as easily, or your sleep feels lighter. This is based on how these two work together, not on hard studies, so it's more of a theory. A cup earlier in the day is unlikely to matter much, but mate close to bedtime makes the least sense. If your sleep isn't improving, chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
