Here's the simple version: nitrazepam is a benzodiazepine sleep aid, so it already slows your brain down to help you feel calm and drowsy. Ashwagandha appears to have its own mild calming, sedative quality. Stack the two together and you may feel more of nitrazepam's usual effects, things like heavier drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, poor balance, or feeling foggy and slow the next morning.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's theoretical, based on how each works rather than solid studies, so it may not be a big deal for everyone. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're older or already feel oversedated.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines.
There is preliminary evidence that ashwagandha might have an additive effect with diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin). This may also occur with other benzodiazepines.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Nitrazepam is already a sedating benzodiazepine, often used to help with sleep. Ashwagandha tends to have its own calming, sleep-promoting effect. When you stack the two together, those effects can pile up. So in theory you could feel more drowsy than usual, groggy or foggy the next morning, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, which raises the risk of a fall.

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how each acts in the body rather than strong studies in people. It doesn't mean it will definitely happen. Still, since both relax the nervous system, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're older or feel extra sleepy.
