Serotonergic Drugs
Why this applies to Vortioxetine
Vortioxetine falls under Serotonergic Drugs — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Trintellix (vortioxetine) and ashwagandha. Vortioxetine already raises serotonin levels in your brain to help with depression. Some animal research hints that ashwagandha may also nudge serotonin activity. In theory, stacking two things that touch serotonin could add up.
I want to be honest about how thin this is. There are no human case reports of problems when ashwagandha is combined with serotonin medications, and this is rated a minor, possible interaction. The realistic worry would be rare serotonin-related symptoms like jitteriness, agitation, sweating, a racing heart, or stomach upset. That's unlikely, but if you'd like to add ashwagandha, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

“Vortioxetine (Trintellix) is an antidepressant that works through serotonin, which makes this a list to treat with real care. Two of the 100 ingredients on file rate major: lithium, which can add to the serotonin effect and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome (a dangerous excess of serotonin), and activated charcoal, which can soak up…”

About Ashwagandha
What is Ashwagandha?
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep problems
- Fatigue and low energy
- Athletic performance
- General well-being (adaptogen)
Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb most often taken to help with stress, anxiety, and sleep, and some small studies suggest it may help, though the evidence is still limited. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but it should be avoided in pregnancy and used cautiously by people with thyroid or liver problems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Vortioxetine
What Is Vortioxetine Used For?
Brand names: Trintellix, Brintellix, Sehippy
Trintellix (vortioxetine) is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. MDD is more than ordinary sadness — it is a persistent low mood that interferes with daily life and requires medical treatment.
Trintellix is not approved for use in children or teenagers. If you or a family member are wondering about treatment for depression in someone under 18, talk with a healthcare provider about what options are studied and approved for that age group.

Vortioxetine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Vortioxetine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Ashwagandha — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
