Selegiline falls under Serotonergic Drugs — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Some animal studies have reported that ashwagandha can enhance serotonergic transmission by altering certain serotonin (5-HT) receptors. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ashwagandha increases the risk of serotonin-related effects, and there have been no published case reports of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Nevertheless, due to the lack of extensive studies on the matter and the fact that ashwagandha appears to affect serotonergic pathways, it would be prudent to exercise caution when combining it with drugs that affect serotonin. Here's the connection worth knowing. Selegiline raises dopamine levels and, especially at higher doses or with the Emsam patch, it can also nudge serotonin activity in your brain. Some animal studies hint that ashwagandha may gently affect serotonin pathways too. On paper, stacking two things that touch serotonin raises a theoretical question about overdoing it.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. There are no human reports of problems when these two are combined, and the evidence here is weak. In rare cases, too much serotonin can cause agitation, sweating, a fast heartbeat, or shivering, but that's unlikely from this pairing. Since selegiline is an MAO inhibitor with real interaction concerns, please run ashwagandha by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Selegiline Used For?

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
