Yerba Mate and Phenprocoumon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Phenprocoumon

Phenprocoumon falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, it might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents; however, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Phenprocoumon is a blood thinner that works a lot like warfarin, keeping your blood from clotting too easily. The concern here is mild and mostly theoretical. The caffeine in yerba mate has shown some weak ability to keep platelets (the cells that help blood clot) from sticking together in lab studies. In theory, stacking that on top of a blood thinner could nudge your bleeding risk up a little.

Here's the honest part: this has never actually been reported in people, and it's based on test-tube data only. A cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, because phenprocoumon has a narrow safety window, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your doctor or pharmacist before drinking large amounts.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenprocoumon page

“Phenprocoumon (Liquamar) is a blood thinner in the coumarin family, a close cousin of warfarin, and small shifts in its blood level can tip you toward a clot or a bleed, so I treat this list with genuine care. Almost everything on it pushes the drug's effect further, layering extra bleeding risk on blood that is already thinned.”

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
