Yerba Mate + Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel brand names: Logynon, Microgynon 30 ED.
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 4 drug categories that Yerba Mate can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, estrogens might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ESTROGENS
1 of 4Why this applies to Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under ESTROGENS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind with your birth control pill (Microgynon or Logynon) and yerba mate: the interaction actually runs the other direction from what you might expect. The estrogen in your pill slows down how fast your body clears caffeine. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, it can stick around longer and hit harder than it normally would.
So you might notice more of those classic caffeine effects, like feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach. Your pill itself still works fine, this is really about the caffeine building up. If you enjoy mate daily, just go a little easier and see how you feel. Chat with your pharmacist if the jitters become bothersome.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS
2 of 4Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a small twist worth knowing about. With your birth control pill (Logynon or Microgynon), the concern isn't that yerba mate changes your contraceptive. It's actually the reverse. The estrogen in your pill can mildly slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, that caffeine may hang around a bit longer than usual.
In plain terms, your usual cup of mate might hit you a little harder. You could feel more jittery, notice a racing heart, or have trouble sleeping. This is theoretical and rated as minor, so it's nothing to panic over. If you find yourself feeling wired, just ease up on the mate. As always, check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 4Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your birth control pill (the estrogen and progestin combo in Logynon or Microgynon) is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, yerba mate seemed to slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in the body, hormone levels could drift slightly higher, which in theory might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
Honestly though, this is very weak, lab-only evidence rated as minor, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a few cups of mate. Your pill should still work to prevent pregnancy. If you drink mate heavily every day or notice new side effects, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
4 of 4Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Contraceptive drugs decrease the rate of caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something a little different about this pairing. Your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel in Logynon or Microgynon) doesn't get weaker or stronger from yerba mate. Instead, the pill changes how your body handles the caffeine in the mate. The estrogen slows down how fast you clear caffeine, by roughly 40 to 65 percent, so it lingers longer in your system.
In plain terms, a cup of mate may hit you harder and last longer than usual. You might notice jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. This is a minor, theoretical effect, so most people just space out their caffeine or have a bit less. If it bothers you, chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel page
“A supplement that lowers hormone levels in a birth control pill can mean an unplanned pregnancy, and St. John's wort can do exactly that to ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (Logynon, Microgynon 30 ED) by speeding up how your liver clears the hormones.”

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
