Here's the simple version: your rescue inhaler, salbutamol (Ventolin), is a stimulant for your airways and heart. Yerba mate brings its own kick because it's loaded with caffeine. Stack a stimulant on top of a stimulant and you may feel it, mostly as a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, shaky hands, or a wired, restless feeling. Salbutamol on its own can already cause those, and caffeine can nudge them up a notch.

Now the honest part: this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work, not on hard studies, and it's more likely with big amounts of mate. A normal cup probably won't be a problem. If you're going through several puffs a day or notice your heart racing, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Brand names: Ventolin, Salvent, Salmol, Airomir, Asmasal Clickhaler, Salamol Easi-Breathe, Ventmax SR, Volmax, Ventolin Syrup, Ventolin Injection, Ventolin Evohaler, Ventolin Accuhaler, Ventolin Nebules, Ventolin Respirator Solution, Salapin, Salamol, Easyhaler Salbutamol, Pulvinal Salbutamol, Salbutamol Cyclocaps, Salamol Steri-Neb

Albuterol relieves bronchospasm, which is tightening of the muscles around the airways. This happens in reversible obstructive airway disease such as asthma. Which use is approved depends on the product and the age group.

Albuterol inhalers and inhalation powders (including ProAir Digihaler, ProAir RespiClick and Ventolin HFA) are used to treat or prevent bronchospasm. They are also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm. Both uses are for ages 4 and older. Albuterol inhalation solution (for a nebulizer) and albuterol tablets and syrup are labeled for relief of bronchospasm, with different minimum ages by product.
