Coffee and Salbutamol Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Salbutamol Sulfate

Salbutamol Sulfate falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of coffee might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both your salbutamol inhaler (Ventolin) and the caffeine in coffee can rev up the heart and nervous system. Salbutamol already tends to cause a faster heartbeat, a fluttery or pounding feeling, and a bit of the shakes or jitters. Caffeine can push those same effects a little further, so stacking a lot of coffee on top of frequent puffs might leave you feeling more wired, jittery, or aware of your heartbeat than usual.

This one is mostly theoretical, based on how the two work rather than strong real-world studies, and a normal cup or two is unlikely to be a big deal. If you rely on your inhaler often or notice your heart racing, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor rather than changing anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Salbutamol Sulfate page

“People who rely on salbutamol (Ventolin) to open their airways during asthma or COPD flares should give this list real attention, starting with its one major-rated interaction, activated charcoal. Charcoal, sold in detox and gut-cleanse products, can soak up many medicines and blunt their effect.”

  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
