Coffee and Terbutaline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Terbutaline

Terbutaline falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of coffee might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: terbutaline is a beta-agonist, which means it can already nudge your heart to beat a little faster and harder while it's opening up your airways. Coffee's caffeine works in a similar stimulating direction. So when you stack a lot of coffee on top of terbutaline, the two can add up and make those heart-related effects more noticeable.

In real life that might look like a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, shakiness, or trouble sleeping. I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than strong studies, and a normal cup or two probably won't cause problems for most folks. It's mainly heavy coffee intake to watch. If you notice your heart racing or feel wired, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.

About Terbutaline

What Is Terbutaline Used For?

Brand names: Bricanyl, Brethine, Bricanyl Injection, Bricanyl Turbohaler

Terbutaline Sulfate — available as both a tablet and a subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection — is used to prevent and reverse bronchospasm (sudden tightening of the airways) in adults and children 12 years and older. It is indicated for people with asthma and for reversible bronchospasm associated with bronchitis and emphysema.

Both Terbutaline Sulfate Tablets and Terbutaline Sulfate Injection share these approved uses. The injection form acts more quickly and is given by a healthcare provider under the skin, while the tablet form is taken by mouth on a regular schedule during waking hours.
