Theoretically, coffee may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in coffee might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.

Here's the gist with Pradaxa (dabigatran) and your morning coffee. Dabigatran is a blood thinner, and the concern on file is purely theoretical: caffeine may have a mild effect on platelets (the cells that help blood clot) and might slightly boost the breakdown of clots. In a lab setting, that could add to a blood thinner's effect and, in theory, raise bleeding risk a touch.

The honest part is that this has never actually been reported in people, and the evidence comes only from test-tube and animal studies. For most folks, a normal cup or two won't be a problem. Still, if you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that won't stop, let your pharmacist or doctor know.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are approved for adults to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism (blood clots traveling through the body) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). Capsules are also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein, usually the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a clot in the lungs), to prevent those clots from coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

For children, the capsule form is approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism — blood clots in veins) and reducing recurrence in patients aged 8 to under 18. Pradaxa Oral Pellets are approved specifically for children aged 3 months to under 12 years for the same treatment and recurrence-prevention purposes.
