Coffee and Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

ESTROGENS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol

Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under ESTROGENS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, estrogens might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Coffee contains caffeine. Estrogen inhibits caffeine metabolism.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's a twist worth knowing: with the Ortho Evra (Evra) patch, it's actually the estrogen part that affects your coffee, not the other way around. The ethinyl estradiol in your patch can slow down how your liver clears caffeine. That means caffeine may hang around a bit longer and hit you harder than usual.

In real life, you might notice more of the usual caffeine effects: feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble falling asleep, or an upset stomach. Your birth control still works just fine, and your morning cup is not going to fail your contraception. If you feel wired or can't sleep, simply easing back on coffee usually does the trick. Chat with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS

Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS.

Coffee contains caffeine. Oral contraceptive drugs can decrease caffeine clearance by 40% to 65%.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs from your patch to the caffeine in your coffee, not the other way around. The estrogen in your Ortho Evra patch (ethinyl estradiol) slows down the liver enzyme that clears caffeine, so caffeine can hang around in your body 40% to 65% longer than usual. Your birth control still works fine, and the patch itself isn't weakened by coffee.

What this means in real life is that your usual two or three cups might hit a little harder. You may notice more jitteriness, a racing heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. If that happens, simply cutting back on coffee usually does the trick. Chat with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy.
