Doxepin falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, TCAs might bind with coffee constituents when taken at the same time.
In vitro research suggests that the tannins in coffee might cause precipitation of TCAs. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with doxepin and your morning coffee. Lab studies (in a test tube, not in people) suggest the tannins in coffee can bind to tricyclic antidepressants like doxepin and cause them to clump together. In theory, that could mean a bit less doxepin actually gets absorbed, which might slightly soften its effect, like making your nighttime dose a touch less reliable for sleep.

The reassuring part: this has never actually been shown to be a problem in real patients. It's a minor, theoretical concern only. To be safe and practical, just don't wash your doxepin down with coffee at the exact same moment. Take it with water, and space it from coffee. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you set up the timing.
