Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Coffee interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the short version: methyclothiazide is a thiazide water pill, and one of its known habits is to push potassium out of your body through your urine. Coffee's caffeine, especially in larger amounts, can nudge potassium down a little too. So when you stack the two, there's a theoretical chance your potassium dips lower than it would with the pill alone.

To be fair, this concern is based on how the two work on paper, not on strong studies, so a normal cup or two with breakfast usually isn't a big deal. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an off-feeling heartbeat. If you drink a lot of coffee or energy drinks, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your potassium and keep an eye on things.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
