Coffee + Ethanol
Ethanol brand name: Ethanol.
Coffee has a minor interaction with Ethanol. Theoretically, alcohol might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ALCOHOL (Ethanol)
Coffee contains caffeine. Concomitant use of alcohol and caffeine can increase caffeine serum concentrations and the risk of caffeine adverse effects. Alcohol reduces caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a flip on what most people expect. In this pairing, it's the alcohol that affects the coffee, not the other way around. Drinking alcohol can slow down how fast your liver clears caffeine, so the caffeine from your coffee may hang around longer and build up a bit more than usual.
In real life, that might mean feeling more wired, jittery, a faster or pounding heartbeat, or trouble settling down to sleep. The good news is this is rated minor and is mostly theoretical, based on how the body handles these two rather than strong studies. For most folks, a coffee and a drink now and then won't cause trouble. If you're sensitive to caffeine or already feeling shaky, ease up and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

This page covers Coffee only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Ethanol page lists 65 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: 1,4-butanediol (major), Activated Charcoal (major), Coca (major), Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) (major) and Tansy (major).
By severity: 5 major · 38 moderate · 22 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethanol page
“Ethanol used as a medication is still alcohol, and its supplement list calls for real vigilance, starting with the five entries rated major. GHB is the starkest of these, since combining it with alcohol can cause serious sedation, suppressed breathing, and low blood pressure, a risk confirmed in human studies.”

About Coffee
What is Coffee?
- Alertness and reducing fatigue
- Mental focus and concentration
- Athletic performance
- Headache relief
- Weight management
Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.

Ethanol Is Linked to Lower Levels of 4 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Ethanol as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Coffee — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
