Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about alendronate (Fosamax): your body barely absorbs it to begin with, even on an empty stomach. Studies show that washing it down with coffee (or drinking coffee around the same time) can cut how much gets into your system by roughly 60%. That's a big drop, and it could leave you with less protection against bone thinning and fractures, which is the whole reason you're taking it.

The good news is this is easy to manage. Alendronate is meant to be taken first thing in the morning with plain water only, then you wait at least 30 minutes (and stay upright) before eating or drinking anything else, coffee included. Giving it that gap lets the drug absorb properly. If you're unsure about your timing, check with your pharmacist or doctor.
