Alendronate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Carob interacts with.

Theoretically, carob might also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing with alendronate (Fosamax): even on its own, your body absorbs only a tiny fraction of each dose. That's why the directions are so strict, you take it with plain water on an empty stomach and stay upright for at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. Almost anything in your stomach can grab onto it and block that already small amount from getting in.

Carob is fiber-rich and full of tannins that can bind to things in the gut, so in theory it could lower how much alendronate you absorb, which might mean less benefit for your bones. This is only a theoretical, lab-based concern, not something proven in people. Still, the safest move is to keep carob (and food in general) well separated from your dose. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you time it.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Alendronate Used For?

Brand names: Fosamax, Binosto

Alendronate tablets (including Alendronate, Alendronate Sodium, and Fosamax) are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, treat osteoporosis in men, treat glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (bone loss caused by long-term steroid use) in men and women, and treat Paget's disease of bone. Binosto effervescent tablet is specifically indicated for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis.

Alendronate Sodium oral solution is indicated for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Alendronate helps build bone mass and reduce the risk of fractures, including hip and spinal fractures.
