Here's the gist with carob and your levonorgestrel pill (like Plan B). Carob is rich in fiber and tannins, and the theory is that these could bind a little to whatever is in your stomach and slow how well an oral medicine gets absorbed. With an emergency contraceptive, you really want the full dose working, since you only get one shot at it and timing matters.

Now, the honest part: this concern comes only from lab and animal studies looking at mineral absorption, not real-world reports with levonorgestrel, so it's a minor, theoretical issue. Levonorgestrel is not a prodrug, so this wouldn't make it stronger. To be safe, just separate them, taking carob about 30 to 60 minutes after your pill, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Levonorgestrel

What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?

Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena

Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.

As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
