Tree Turmeric + Levonorgestrel
Levonorgestrel brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, and others.
Tree Turmeric has a moderate interaction with Levonorgestrel. Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Levonorgestrel
Levonorgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down levonorgestrel, the progestin in products like Plan B and Mirena. The berberine in tree turmeric can mildly slow that enzyme down. In theory, that means a bit more levonorgestrel could hang around in your system for a little longer.
Levonorgestrel is an active hormone, not a prodrug, so slowing its breakdown would lean toward slightly stronger or longer-lasting effects, think spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, or headache. The good news is this is mostly theoretical and the change is expected to be modest, so it's unlikely to make a single dose unsafe. Still, before pairing them, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Tree Turmeric
What is Tree Turmeric?
- Blood sugar support
- High cholesterol
- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Early research suggests possible benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality human evidence is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Levonorgestrel
What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?
Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena
Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways, depending on the product.
The intrauterine systems (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena and Skyla) prevent pregnancy for a set number of years. Mirena and Liletta are also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women who choose intrauterine contraception. The oral tablets are used for emergency contraception, to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex.
