There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the gist for camphor alongside levonorgestrel (like Plan B or Mirena). The concern on file is purely theoretical: both can, in rare cases, put a little stress on the liver, so using them together might add up. This isn't about camphor changing how well your emergency contraception works, and levonorgestrel isn't a prodrug, so there's no flipped activation issue to worry about.

Honestly, this one is built on a handful of case reports of mild, temporary liver enzyme bumps, not strong proof. Used as directed on your skin, camphor in normal amounts is unlikely to cause trouble. Never swallow camphor, it's toxic that way. If you have liver problems or feel unsure, a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor will set your mind at ease.

Camphor is a strong-smelling compound from the camphor tree (or made synthetically) that is used in many topical rub-on products for muscle aches, itching, and chest congestion. It can be helpful for these uses when applied to the skin in small, regulated amounts, but it is toxic and potentially deadly if swallowed, so it should never be taken by mouth. Keep camphor products away from children and check with a pharmacist before use.

About Levonorgestrel

What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?

Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena

Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.

As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
