Methotrexate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Camphor interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of camphor with other hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
There have been a few case reports of transient elevations in liver enzymes in adults after oral or topical use of camphor. There has also been one case of hepatotoxicity in an infant after topical camphor use.

Here's the connection worth knowing: methotrexate can be tough on your liver, especially when you take it weekly for things like rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis. That's why your doctor checks your liver enzymes with blood tests. Camphor, the cooling ingredient in many rub-on muscle and chest products, has been tied to a few reports of liver enzyme bumps too. The worry is that stacking two things that may stress the liver could add up.

I want to be honest about how strong this is: it's mostly theoretical, based on how each works rather than solid proof. Normal topical use on a small skin area is unlikely to be a big deal. The real danger with camphor is swallowing it, which can be toxic, so never take it by mouth. If you use camphor often, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Camphor is a strong-smelling compound from the camphor tree (or made synthetically) that is used in many topical rub-on products for muscle aches, itching, and chest congestion. It can be helpful for these uses when applied to the skin in small, regulated amounts, but it is toxic and potentially deadly if swallowed, so it should never be taken by mouth. Keep camphor products away from children and check with a pharmacist before use.

What Is Methotrexate Used For?

Brand names: Rheumatrex, Otrexup, Rasuvo, Reditrex

Methotrexate treats a wide range of serious conditions. In cancer care, it is used for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (a rare tumor related to pregnancy). It is also used to prevent and treat meningeal leukemia (cancer affecting the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

Outside of cancer, methotrexate is prescribed for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), children with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (a form of childhood arthritis), and adults with severe psoriasis that hasn't responded well to other treatments.
