Tree Turmeric + Nifedipine
Nifedipine brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, and others.
Nifedipine falls into 2 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking tree turmeric along with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Nifedipine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Nifedipine
Nifedipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have hypotensive effects. Also, a meta-analysis of clinical research suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine (Norvasc) can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with taking amlodipine alone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: nifedipine already works to relax your blood vessels and bring your blood pressure down. Tree turmeric, mainly through its berberine content, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Stack the two together and the effect could add up, which means your pressure might dip a little lower than expected.
If that happens, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or notice your heart racing or your ankles swelling, especially when you stand up quickly. To be fair, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on animal studies plus some research on a related drug, so it's not a sure thing. Still, if you take nifedipine and want to try tree turmeric, check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Nifedipine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist: your body clears nifedipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The berberine in tree turmeric can put the brakes on that same enzyme, so nifedipine may break down more slowly and build up in your blood. Nifedipine isn't a prodrug, so more drug hanging around means a stronger effect, not a weaker one.
In practice, that could mean a bigger drop in blood pressure than expected, along with things like dizziness, flushing, headache, swollen ankles, or a faster heartbeat. The clinical evidence here is still early and somewhat theoretical, so this won't happen to everyone. Still, before you pair these two, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure.

About Tree Turmeric
What is Tree Turmeric?
- Blood sugar support
- High cholesterol
- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Early research suggests possible benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality human evidence is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Nifedipine
What Is Nifedipine Used For?
Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR
Nifedipine treats vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by a spasm in a heart artery) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with effort). It can be used for chronic stable angina when other treatments, such as beta blockers or nitrates, haven't worked well enough or can't be tolerated.
