Tree Turmeric + Diazepam
Diazepam brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco.
Diazepam falls into 3 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, use of tree turmeric along with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive therapeutic and adverse effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Diazepam falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 3Why this applies to Diazepam
Diazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: diazepam (Valium) already works by calming activity in the brain, which is why it eases anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures, but also why it can make you drowsy, foggy, or unsteady. Tree turmeric (and its main compound, berberine) may have a mild calming effect of its own. Put the two together and those sedating effects could, in theory, stack up.
I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It comes from lab and animal studies, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you take diazepam and want to try tree turmeric, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for extra sleepiness or grogginess.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Diazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2C9.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down diazepam (Valium). The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. When clearance slows, diazepam can hang around longer and build up, which may push its calming effects too far. Think more drowsiness, dizziness, mental fog, weakness, or unsteadiness on your feet, especially if you're older or also take other sedating medicines or alcohol.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's mostly theoretical, backed by early, lower-quality evidence, so it may not be a big deal for everyone. Still, please don't start or stop anything on your own. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can watch for extra sleepiness.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Diazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down diazepam (Valium). The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down, so the diazepam may clear out of your system a little more slowly than usual. The likely result is more diazepam hanging around, which can boost its effects.
In real life, that might mean feeling extra drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or unsteady on your feet. Diazepam isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the other way. The good news: this comes from lab work and early human data, so the change is usually mild for most people. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you already feel sedated.

About Tree Turmeric
What is Tree Turmeric?
- Blood sugar support
- High cholesterol
- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Early research suggests possible benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality human evidence is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Diazepam
What Is Diazepam Used For?
Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco
Diazepam treats several different problems, depending on the product. Oral diazepam (tablets such as Valium, and oral solution) is used for anxiety disorders, short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, and symptom relief in acute alcohol withdrawal. It is also used alongside other treatments for muscle spasm and, adjunctively, for convulsive disorders (seizure disorders).
Diazepam injection is used for the same anxiety and alcohol withdrawal uses. It is also used before endoscopic procedures, before surgery, and before cardioversion (when given intravenously). It helps with muscle spasm and tetanus, and with status epilepticus (a prolonged, dangerous seizure) as an add-on. Diazepam rectal gel and Valtoco nasal spray are used only for seizure clusters (acute repetitive seizures) in people with epilepsy ages 2 and older.

Diazepam Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Diazepam as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Tree Turmeric — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
