Atazanavir, Cobicistat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for your Evotaz (atazanavir with cobicistat). The berberine in tree turmeric can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the main pathways your body uses to clear atazanavir. When that pathway gets slowed, atazanavir levels can creep up a bit higher than expected.

In real terms, that might mean a better chance of side effects like an upset stomach, nausea, or that yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) atazanavir is known for. Keep in mind this is mostly based on lab work and early human data, so it's a possibility rather than a sure thing. Still, with an HIV medicine you don't want to gamble with, please run tree turmeric by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Atazanavir and Cobicistat Used For?

Brand name: Evotaz

Evotaz (atazanavir/cobicistat) is used to treat HIV-1 infection. It must always be taken together with other antiretroviral medicines — it is not a complete regimen on its own. It is approved for adults and for pediatric patients who weigh at least 35 kg.

In patients who have been on HIV treatment before (treatment-experienced), how well Evotaz works depends on how much resistance to protease inhibitors the virus has already developed. Your prescriber will review this before starting you on Evotaz.
