Tree Turmeric and Verapamil

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Verapamil falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Verapamil

Verapamil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, taking tree turmeric along with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have hypotensive effects. Also, a meta-analysis of clinical research suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine (Norvasc) can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with taking amlodipine alone.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: tree turmeric (mostly its berberine) may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since verapamil already relaxes your blood vessels and slows your heart rate, stacking the two together could nudge your blood pressure a bit lower than you want. Verapamil works as-is (it isn't a prodrug that needs activating), so this is simply an additive blood-pressure-lowering effect, not a change in how the drug is broken down.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, unusually tired, or notice your pulse running slow. To be fair, this caution comes mostly from animal and lab data, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since verapamil affects heart rate too, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding tree turmeric.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Verapamil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence A

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down verapamil and clear it out. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down. With verapamil getting cleared more slowly, its levels can creep up, which means a stronger effect than you bargained for.

For verapamil specifically, that could show up as too-low blood pressure, a slower-than-normal heart rate, dizziness, lightheadedness, swollen ankles, or constipation. This isn't a reason to panic, and the concern is more about concentrated berberine supplements than a sprinkle in food. Still, since verapamil affects your heart rhythm, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two so they can keep an eye on your pulse and pressure.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Verapamil page

“This is one of the longer interaction lists we publish, and with verapamil (Calan, Verelan) it warrants genuine care, starting with the ten major-rated entries. Verapamil lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so most of the 295 ingredients on file either push that effect further than intended or change how much of the drug reaches…”
