Theoretically, taking tree turmeric along with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have hypotensive effects. Also, a meta-analysis of clinical research suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine (Norvasc) can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with taking amlodipine alone.

Here's the simple version: tree turmeric's main ingredient, berberine, may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since losartan is already working to bring your blood pressure down, stacking the two could push it lower than you want. That's an additive effect, not a chemical clash with how your body processes the drug.

If your pressure dips too far, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or shaky, especially when standing up quickly. Keep in mind this concern leans mostly on animal studies and one trial using a different blood pressure drug, so the evidence here is on the weaker side. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and check your blood pressure at home if you do.

Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about losartan: your liver actually has to convert it into its more active form using an enzyme called CYP2C9. So losartan works a bit like a prodrug. Berberine, the active piece of tree turmeric, can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could mean less of the active blood-pressure-lowering form being made, so your losartan might not work quite as well.

To be fair, this is based on early, lower-quality research, so it's more of a heads-up than a red alarm. Still, if you take tree turmeric regularly and notice your blood pressure creeping up, mention it. Please don't start or stop anything on your own, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

Here's something worth knowing if you're taking losartan (Cozaar) alongside tree turmeric. The berberine in this supplement can moderately slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme helps turn losartan into its more active form. So in losartan's case, blocking that enzyme could actually mean a bit less of the active drug, which might soften its blood-pressure-lowering effect.

In practice this is mostly theoretical, and everyday cooking amounts wouldn't matter. But concentrated berberine supplements are a different story. If you're using both, keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything. They can help you decide what's right for you.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
