Here's the thing to understand: this interaction runs in the opposite direction from what you might expect. It's not that levonorgestrel changes because of the cola nut. Instead, levonorgestrel can act as a mild blocker of an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. Cola nut's main active ingredient is caffeine, so if that enzyme is slowed down, caffeine may hang around a bit longer than usual.

In real life that could mean stronger or longer-lasting caffeine effects, like jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is theoretical, based on how the drugs work rather than solid studies, and a one-time emergency pill like Plan B is unlikely to cause much. Still, if you notice it, ease up on the caffeine and check with your pharmacist.

Hormonal contraceptives can slow how fast your body clears caffeine, sometimes by 40% to 65%. So the caffeine from cola nut may hang around longer and hit a little harder.

In real life, that could mean more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. The good news is this is rated minor and the evidence is modest. Also worth noting, single-dose products like Plan B aren't a daily hormone source, so any caffeine effect would mostly apply with ongoing levonorgestrel use, such as a Mirena or Skyla. If you notice you're extra sensitive to caffeine, ease back on cola nut and check with your pharmacist.

About Levonorgestrel

What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?

Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena

Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.

As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
