Here's the thing to know if you take cola nut while on levofloxacin: it's really the caffeine in cola nut that's the issue, not the antibiotic getting weaker or stronger. Levofloxacin can slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine from your body. So the caffeine tends to hang around longer and build up.

In plain terms, your usual cola nut might hit harder than expected. You could notice things like jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or feeling wired. This effect is more likely with concentrated cola nut supplements than a small culinary amount. If you're sensitive to caffeine, it may be worth easing back while you're on this antibiotic. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Levaquin, Levaquin Injection, Leva-pak

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
