Cola Nut and Pericyazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

PHENOTHIAZINES

Why this applies to Pericyazine

Pericyazine falls under PHENOTHIAZINES — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, phenothiazines might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in cola nut.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Phenothiazines can reduce the metabolism of caffeine by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2).
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Pericyazine and cola nut. Pericyazine is an older antipsychotic in the phenothiazine family, and it can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. Since cola nut is essentially a natural source of caffeine, the theory is that the caffeine could hang around a bit longer than usual.

In plain terms, you might feel the caffeine more strongly: a little jittery, a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. The good news is this is rated minor and is based on lab-level reasoning, not strong human studies. A cup of cola-flavored drink is unlikely to be an issue, but concentrated cola nut supplements are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pericyazine page

“Pericyazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic, usually prescribed to calm severe agitation or psychosis, and losing control of that treatment has real consequences, so I'd read this list with genuine care. Start with the three major-rated entries.”
