Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of both caffeine and riluzole.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Caffeine and riluzole are both metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2, and concomitant use might reduce metabolism of one or both agents.

Here's the simple version. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear both riluzole and the caffeine found in cola nut. When you take them together, they can compete for that same cleanup pathway, so each one may hang around a little longer than usual. Riluzole is active on its own (it isn't a prodrug), so higher levels can mean stronger effects and a greater chance of side effects like dizziness, nausea, tiredness, or stomach upset. The extra caffeine can also pile on jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, and trouble sleeping.

Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work rather than real patient studies, so it may not cause problems for everyone. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a cola nut supplement.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
