Cola Nut and Nicotine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Cola Nut interacts with whole categories of medication. Nicotine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Cola Nut in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Nicotine

Nicotine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's the simple version: both cola nut and nicotine are stimulants. Cola nut works mainly through its caffeine, and nicotine (whether from a patch, gum, lozenge, or inhaler) gives the body its own little jolt. Stack two stimulants together and the effects can add up.

What might that feel like? Think jitteriness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, a bump in blood pressure, trouble sleeping, or feeling anxious or shaky. None of this changes how either one is broken down in your body, it's just two pep-ups working at the same time. This is based on expert opinion rather than strong studies, so for most people it's a manageable concern. If you notice your heart racing or you feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

NICOTINE

2 of 2
Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypertension.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Concomitant use of caffeine and nicotine has been shown to have additive cardiovascular effects, including increased heart rate and blood pressure. Blood pressure was increased by 10.8/12.4 mmHg when the agents were used concomitantly.

Here's the simple version: both cola nut and nicotine are stimulants. Cola nut's punch comes from the caffeine it carries, and nicotine (whether from a patch, gum, lozenge, or inhaler) is a stimulant too. When you stack two stimulants, their effects can add up. Studies on caffeine plus nicotine showed heart rate creeping up and blood pressure rising by roughly 11/12 mmHg together, more than either alone.

For most healthy people this is mild and short-lived, and this concern is based on how these compounds behave rather than strong long-term studies. But if you notice a racing heart, jitteriness, or you already have high blood pressure or a heart condition, that's worth flagging. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nicotine page

“Nicotine itself is a stimulant, whether it comes from a Nicoderm CQ patch, Nicorette gum, or a Nicotrol inhaler, so treat this list with genuine care. Of the 64 supplements and herbs on file, 44 add more stimulation on top of the nicotine, which can push heart rate and blood pressure higher than either would alone.”

About Cola Nut

What is Cola Nut?

Cola Nut
  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Physical performance
  • Weight loss support
  • Traditional digestive aid

Cola nut is a caffeine-containing seed from West Africa used mainly as a natural stimulant for energy and alertness. Most of its effects come from caffeine, and strong human evidence for specific health benefits is limited. Because of its caffeine content, people sensitive to stimulants and those who are pregnant or have heart conditions should be cautious.
