Cola Nut and Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS

Why this applies to Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate

Erythromycin Ethylsuccinate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP1A2 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in cola nut.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2,.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combo. Your body normally clears the caffeine from cola nut using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Erythromycin can slow that enzyme down a bit, so the caffeine may hang around longer than usual and stack up. That can mean more of the typical caffeine effects, things like jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, and feeling wired or anxious.

I'll be honest, this one is mostly theoretical and based on how the drug works, not on strong patient studies, so for many people it stays mild. Still, if you notice you're more buzzed than usual on your usual coffee or cola nut, ease up on the caffeine. Have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

About Cola Nut

What is Cola Nut?

Cola Nut
  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Physical performance
  • Weight loss support
  • Traditional digestive aid

Cola nut is a caffeine-containing seed from West Africa used mainly as a natural stimulant for energy and alertness. Most of its effects come from caffeine, and strong human evidence for specific health benefits is limited. Because of its caffeine content, people sensitive to stimulants and those who are pregnant or have heart conditions should be cautious.
