Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it that gel can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach. With riluzole, the concern is that this gel may slow or lower how much of the drug your body actually absorbs. Riluzole works as-is (it is not a prodrug that needs activating), so less absorption could mean a weaker effect from your ALS medication, which you don't want.

The good news is timing usually fixes it. A reasonable habit is to take your riluzole first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before taking guar gum. Riluzole also has its own food timing rules, so please run your exact schedule by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
