Saigon Cinnamon + Levonorgestrel
Levonorgestrel brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, and others.
Saigon Cinnamon has a moderate interaction with Levonorgestrel. Theoretically, Saigon cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Levonorgestrel
Levonorgestrel falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Saigon cinnamon and levonorgestrel (like Plan B or Mirena): this isn't about cinnamon making your birth control stronger or weaker. The concern is purely about the liver. Cassia cinnamons like Saigon are high in a compound called coumarin, and in large supplement doses coumarin has, rarely, stressed the liver. Levonorgestrel, like many hormones, is also processed by the liver, so the worry is just a small additive load on that one organ.
Honestly, this is theoretical, based on lab and animal data, not real reports in people taking these together. A normal single dose of levonorgestrel plus food amounts of cinnamon is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you regularly use concentrated cinnamon supplements or have liver issues, check with your pharmacist first.

About Saigon Cinnamon
What is Saigon Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.
About Levonorgestrel
What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?
Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena
Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.
As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
