Saigon Cinnamon and Rifampin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Rifampin

Rifampin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Saigon cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: rifampin can be tough on the liver on its own, and it's actually one of the medicines doctors watch liver labs for during TB treatment. Saigon cinnamon is a cassia-type cinnamon that's naturally high in coumarin, a compound that has stressed the liver in animal studies and, at very high doses, in some people too.

The worry is that stacking the two could add up and make liver irritation a bit more likely. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not something proven in studies. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules taken daily are where I'd pause. Watch for yellowing eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking any cinnamon supplement.

About Saigon Cinnamon

What is Saigon Cinnamon?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
