HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Interferon Alfa-2b
Interferon Alfa-2b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Saigon cinnamon (a cassia cinnamon) is naturally high in coumarin, a compound that, in large supplement-sized amounts, can be tough on the liver. Interferon Alfa-2b can also stress the liver on its own, especially since it's often used for people who already have hepatitis B or C and some liver damage. Put the two together and the worry is simply an added burden on an already busy liver.
This is a theoretical concern based on how coumarin behaves, not proven harm in people taking interferon, so don't panic. The flavor amount you sprinkle in food is very unlikely to matter. The caution is about concentrated cinnamon capsules taken daily. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a cinnamon supplement.

About Saigon Cinnamon
What is Saigon Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.

Interferon alfa-2b works to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) by decreasing the amount virus in the body. Interferon alfa-2b may not cure hepatitis B or hepatitis C or prevent you from developing complications from these infections such as cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, or liver cancer. It also may not prevent the spread of hepatitis B or C to other people. It is not known exactly how interferon alfa-2b works to treat cancer or genital warts.
